What’s a mantra? What? You Want me to Sing?
These are the questions or comments I receive when I explain the “YOGA” that I practise…
Its called Mantra Yoga ( Kirtan) – The Yoga of Music, better yet, the YOGA of SOUND.
Often times, it takes a few repetitions to really grasp, as we still parallel the thought of “Yoga” with a physical form, rather than experience Yoga for its wholeness of being…Yoga, in the form of a physical, spiritual and mental health practise.
I remember the first time I was introduced myself to “Yoga Chanting”- I was, like many, searching for my Yoga and I found a Yoga retreat online that was leaving to India in the NEW YEAR. I thought to myself … What a great gift to myself !
But it was not your usual “physical” Yoga Retreat, it was “YOGA CHANTING” as the leader was trying to explain to me, making sure I would not get disappointed with the outcome….”We do not do asanas here… we sit and sing”
You can imagine my surprise coming from a musical background and thinking … what? a singing yoga?
With all my heart, curiousity and eagerness inside of me.. I joined up, paid my tuition and left to visit the mother country of all Yoga – INDIA!
…and I had the most wonderful and tranformational time of my life… I had found my YOGA!
How can Yoga chanting have so much power to change me? How does this mantra work?
How can this “YOGA of Sound” bring me so much inner peace and Happiness?
I started practising chanting on a daily basis and noticed the changes after a lapse of time… I recall feeling “lighter” after every chant...
It was like my mind and heart was getting lifted from the Poisons within my mind…
yes… The Poisons of MY Mind
Often, we do not react but we are reacted upon. That is to say that we don’t think, don’t speak and don’t accomplish things of our own free will but through the distorted mirror of our conditioning. This conditioning has in the long term forged a personality for us which is not our own and which we believe to be the real “self”.
We are so unconscious of this programming that we react to things convinced that we are applying the best solutions, when in fact they are quite simply the result of a distortion of the mind.
When we practise yoga of Sound, we enter into our “self” and recognize our truth… OUR own truth.
We all have different truths…and our truths need to be EXPRESSED!
So what’s your truth? Would you like to get Un-stuck ?
